Explaining Destiny 2 Focused Fishing Mechanics

A delightful surprise arrived with Season of the Deep in Destiny 2 – the introduction of fishing Destiny 2 Focused Fishing. Initially hinted at during the Season of the Deep reveal trailer, fishing has become a new activity available in the patrol areas of Destiny 2. The best part? Fishing doesn’t require matchmaking, and players only need some Bait, which can be obtained by completing nearly any activity in the game.

While engaged in fishing, players will notice a beneficial effect appearing in the lower left-hand corner of their screen. This effect, called Focused Fishing, is accompanied by a filling bar. In this guide, we will delve into the purpose and mechanics of the Focused Fishing buff.

Understanding Focused Fishing When players approach a Fishing Pond and begin their fishing endeavor, they will immediately notice the appearance of the Focused Fishing buff. At first glance, it may seem that this buff doesn’t have a significant impact since it doesn’t change frequently. However, the bar of the Focused Fishing buff can only be increased by successfully catching Legendary quality fish. While the occurrence of catching such fish is relatively random, players can exert some influence over their catch outcomes in Destiny 2.

To optimize their fishing success, players must pay close attention to their bobber. The moment it completely submerges underwater, players must promptly press the designated button to achieve a Perfect Catch. Delaying by even a second will result in a Nice Catch instead. Combining a Perfect Catch with the utilization of Bait significantly enhances the chances of obtaining higher-quality fish. Thus, chaining Perfect Catches proves to be the most effective method for catching Legendary quality fish.

Any Legendary quality fish caught contributes to the progression of the Focused Fishing buff bar, including fish caught by nearby players or Fireteam members. As the bar gradually fills, fish will bite more frequently. Once the Focused Fishing buff reaches its maximum capacity, players will experience an increased rate of fish catches, greatly improving their chances of obtaining higher-quality fish. This enhanced catch rate also applies to Exotic fish.

Unfortunately, acquiring a Legendary quality fish remains entirely subject to change, even with the presence of the Focused Fishing buff. To compound matters, Fishing Ponds possess a hidden time limit. As soon as a public event begins, the fishing pond will disappear, causing players to lose the Focused Fishing buff. Once the Fishing Pond reappears, players will need to start the process anew.

Tips for Catching Exotic Fish Currently, only one Exotic fish exists within the game, but its acquisition is also subject to RNG (random number generation). Even with the Focused Fishing buff at its maximum capacity, the chance of obtaining the Exotic fish remains random. Some players may encounter it quickly, while others may spend an extended period before encountering it, mirroring the randomness experienced with other Exotic items in the game.

We hope this guide has shed light on the mechanics of Destiny 2’s Focused Fishing. Enjoy your fishing adventures and may your catches be bountiful!
